Steve Matyas, President of STAPLES® Canada™/Bureau en GrosMC, joined The Business Depot Ltd. as their first employee in March 1991. During his 23 plus years with the company, Steve served as Vice President, Operations, Human Resources and Store Planning, and Vice President, Sales and Operations before being appointed President of STAPLES Canada/Bureau en Gros in July 2000. Steve’s expertise in store operations has been instrumental in growing the company from the first store to more than 330 stores currently operating throughout Canada.
Before joining The Business Depot Ltd., Steve worked for several subsidiaries of Koffler Associates, including Superpharm Ltd., and Shoppers Drug Mart Ltd., where he held a variety of senior executive positions including Field Management, Director of Merchandising, Director of Marketing, Executive Vice President, and Chief Operating Officer. Prior to joining Shoppers Drug Mart, Steve held several senior sales management positions with Abbott Laboratories.
Mr. Matyas is a graduate of the University of Toronto and studied business at Queen’s University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Harvard University. Mr. Matyas is a Director, and past Chairman of the Board of the Retail Council of Canada; past Director of EPCOR Utilities and SC REIT; Chairman, HR&C Committee, member of Audit Committee, and Nominating and Governance Committee, and Director, K-Bro Linens Inc.; Director of the University of Alberta Business School Advisory Council on Retail Studies; and Co-chair of the University of Alberta Business School-CIRAS Fundraising Committee. Steve also holds a seat on the Advisory Committee for the School of Retail Management with the Faculty of Business at Ryerson University. In 2003, Mr. Matyas was honoured by the Canadian Institute of Retailing and Services with the Henry Singer Award for exceptional leadership in retailing. In 2007, Steve was inducted into the Retail Council of Canada’s Retail Hall of Fame. In 2008, Mr. Matyas was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Canadian Office Products Association. In 2009 the Ontario Special Olympics organization recognized his contributions with its Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2010 Steve was recognized as the Distinguished Retailer of the Year by the Retail Council of Canada.
Mr. Matyas also speaks four languages: English, French, Hebrew and Romanian.
