FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Staples, Inc. (Nasdaq: SPLS) announced today the appointment of Carol Meyrowitz, president and chief executive officer of The TJX Companies, Inc., to its board of directors.

Carol brings strong executive skills as well as a wealth of retail industry knowledge. Her merchandising expertise and product sourcing background make her a great addition to our strong board of directors, said Ron Sargent, Staples chairman and chief executive officer.

Meyrowitz has been president of TJX since 2005, chief executive officer since January 2007 and a director since 2006. TJX is the leading off-price retailer of apparel and home fashions in the U.S. and worldwide. With over $18 billion in sales and approximately 125,000 associates, TJX operates T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, A.J. Wright and Bobs Stores in the U.S., Winners and HomeSense in Canada and T.K. Maxx in Europe.

Previously, Meyrowitz was president of The Marmaxx Group, the largest division of TJX, from 2001 to 2005. She served as senior executive vice president of TJX from 2004 to 2005 and executive vice president from 2001 to 2004. Prior, she served as executive vice president, merchandising, for Marmaxx. She also held senior merchandising and management positions at Chadwicks of Boston and Hit or Miss, former divisions of TJX. Meyrowitz joined TJX in 1983. She is also a director of Amscan Holdings, Inc. Among her philanthropic activities, Meyrowitz is a member of the board of overseers for the Joslin Diabetes Center.
