"As a leading national brand, Staples provides customers with a convenient way to reserve Windows XP and a great resource for learning more about how it greatly expands computing in the home and office."

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--As a premier provider of Windows XP, Microsoft's major new operating system, Staples, Inc. (Nasdaq:SPLS), the pioneer of the office superstore industry, today announced that customers can reserve copies of Windows XP through its stores, catalog and online at Staples.com. As part of its Windows XP program, Staples also today launched its online Windows XP Learning Center (www.staples.com or www.staples.com/winxp), a comprehensive resource to help customers learn about the innovative new features and benefits as well as system requirements of the new operating system, scheduled for general release on October 25.

"As Windows XP is set to deliver the next revolution in personal computing, Microsoft's strong relationship with Staples is a key part to bringing the powerful new operating system to consumers and small businesses," said Shawn Sanford, group product manager for Windows, at Microsoft Corp. "As a leading national brand, Staples provides customers with a convenient way to reserve Windows XP and a great resource for learning more about how it greatly expands computing in the home and office."

By reserving Windows XP through Staples, simply with a $10 deposit, customers receive a free tutorial CD from M2K titled "Learning Windows XP," as well as free McAfee QuickClean software. The tutorial helps users better understand the benefits and system requirements of the new operating system, and the QuickClean software prepares users' computer hard drives by removing unnecessary files. The total retail value of both of these free offers is $49.98.

The Windows XP Learning Center on Staples.com is a rich online resource that, among other things, explains the new user experiences of the Windows XP Home and Professional editions, such as CD burning, digital imaging, networking, handheld computing with Pocket PC, and the benefits of upgrading with Intel Pentium 4. To get answers to their individual questions, customers can join the Learning Center's online discussion board with Windows XP experts. In addition, customers can find answers to typical questions like `What's different about Windows XP?' and find articles and advice about making the most of the wide range of user experiences.

"With incredible new features, security, reliability, and ease of use, Windows XP brings a whole new level of PC experience and productivity to small businesses and consumers," said Jonathan Magasanik, senior vice president of merchandising at Staples. "Staples reservation program with Microsoft not only helps our customers learn how to fully benefit from Windows XP, but provides the information and tools they need to quickly get their PC Windows XP Ready or order a new PC with Windows XP installed. Ordering Windows XP from Staples is as easy as going to any one of our stores, getting online at Staples.com, or calling through our catalog."

Staples' Windows XP program also expands Staples relationship with MSN, the leading consumer network in the world with more than 250 million unique users, bringing MSN Internet Access promotions to Staples customers. MSN is Staples preferred provider of Internet access and Internet access devices, such as MSN Companion.
