FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Staples Brand Shredders Make it Easy to Protect Sensitive Information and Adhere to the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act

According to the U.S. National Crime Prevention Council, the fastest growing crime in the nation is identity theft. In 2004, the Federal Trade Commission received 246,000 reports of identity theft and estimates that identity theft costs $53 billion dollars annually. Staples, Inc. (NASDAQ: SPLS), the world's largest office products retailer, has introduced its own line of Staples Brand shredders to make it easy for customers to safely dispose of sensitive information.

According to the School, Home & Office Products Association (SHOPA), the market for shredders is $350 million a year. Staples, the world's number one retailer of shredders, has seen dramatic growth in shredder sales in recent years.

"With the increasing prevalence of identity theft, shredders are the first line of defense against those seeking to exploit vital information," said Michael Sacks, vice president and divisional merchandise manager. "Staples Brands' entry into the shredder category provides customers high quality, desired features, and helps them stay in compliance with privacy legislation."

Shredding not only helps protect against fraud, it helps companies comply with federal law. Under the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act, enacted into law this year, consumer or employee information used for business purposes must be properly disposed of - regardless of the size of the business.

Staples Brand Shredders can dispose of credit cards, cut through standard staples, and offer varying levels of sheet capacity and shred capability to accommodate the different needs of businesses and consumers. As with all Staples Brand products, each product undergoes extensive third-party quality testing and each model is under warranty.

-- The $99.99 Staples Heavy-Duty Shredder handles up to 24 pages at a time, even if sheets are paper clipped together, and has CD and DVD destruction capabilities. Designed for frequent use, up to 100 times per day, the Heavy-Duty Shredder offers basic security with strip cut shreds.

-- The $69.99 Staples Medium-Duty Shredder can handle eight sheets at a time, including paper clipped documents. It is designed for moderate use (up to 50 uses per day) and provides an enhanced level of security with cross cut shreds.

-- The $39.99 Staples Light-Duty Shredder is designed for up to 25 uses per day and has a sheet capacity of six pages. Cross cut shreds provide enhanced security.

Staples Makes It Easy to Maintain Optimal Shredder Performance

Staples Shredder Lubricant Sheets eliminate the guess work and mess typically associated with maintaining the best shredder performance. One sheet, used every four to six weeks, treats the blade with just the right amount of lubrication for optimal shredder performance. The sheets retail at $11.99 per 12-pack.
